Creating a portfolio for your business that truly reflects your passion. Reflecting back on an early portfolio test shoot that I set up with Daniel Lightening. I was looking to grow my business and set myself apart from other freelance hairstylists locally. I didn't know at the time that these photoshoots would lead me to specialising within photographic work with major brands and set about my journey into makeup, clothes/ costume styling and film.

I thoroughly recommend test shoots to those looking to grow their brand, create marketing materials and network with creatives. It's been a hell of a long time since I've done any test work now, because at some point you have to know your worth and stop working for free. People will try, but you just have to weigh up the benefits against your time and materials.

Some of those people that i tested with 15 years ago I still work with today and over the years they have led me to a wide variety of paid assignments, and amazing people along the way.

When passion, talent, and teamwork come together, magic happens—and that’s exactly what unfolded in this photoshoot that I organized. From start to finish, the process was a true reflection of the power of collaboration and creative vision.

To bring this concept to life, I worked with photographer Daniel Lightening. We had done a simple test shoot or two and wanted to explore some bigger ideas. Bouncing well off of each other and being such a fan of his creativity it was something that was just so exciting. Having so much to do on this project and wanting to keep things flowing at good speed I booked makeup artist Robin Lowe to take a load off and bring her skills to the table. I personally scouted four incredible and very different models. I carefully selected gowns from Camilla Brides in Sprowston that were just stunning! Curating looks that would perfectly align with the artistic direction of the shoot.

The location? A derelict livery yard that provided the perfect raw backdrop to contrast with the elegance of the gowns. We also secured a prep location nearby, giving us a versatile space to work and shoot in the afternoon.

What made this project even more incredible and rare was that on this occasion everyone involved contributed their skills free of charge. This was more than just a photoshoot; it was a chance for talented professionals to collaborate on a portfolio-building project, get creative, and showcase their skills. The final images are breathtaking—a testament to the immense skill and dedication of the entire team.

As the clothes stylist, hairstylist, and creative director, I took on the responsibility of ensuring that every detail aligned with the creative vision and everyone in the team was happy with the direction and had their input. Organizing such shoots, scouting locations, and assembling a stellar team can be stressful. However the pay off for everyone involved is incredible. It's an opportunity for businesses to elevate their branding and marketing efforts through professionally executed visuals.
